Can Atheists Be Spiritual?

An atheist is a non-believer in a supreme external authority, while a non-atheist believes in a higher power ruler of existence, known by different names across traditions. And between these two, there is a third category known as spiritual. Spirituality is not a matter of being a theist or an atheist. A spiritual person believes in himself rather than accepting or rejecting the existence of a supreme power. A spiritual person is neither a believer nor a disbeliever; they focus on directly experiencing and understanding consciousness.

If you think the number of non-believers is small, then it is worth reconsidering that notion. Half of the world’s population today is atheist, and this number is likely to increase further. Churches in western countries are closing at an alarming rate.  I often wonder why many countries with more atheist appear to report higher levels of happiness, prosperity and social peace. Is it because these societies give more importance to reason, science and individual freedom, allowing people to live with fewer religious pressures and restrictions?

I also think about non-atheists’ societies where people are orthodox, restrictive and not open to accept others. Do these systems sometimes bring inner meaning and moral grounding, or do they also create divisions, conflicts, and limitations that affect collective well-being? This makes me ask a deeper question: is happiness really dependent on whether a society is atheistic or religious, or is it shaped more by the quality of human awareness, freedom of thought, and how consciously people live their lives?

Spirituality is not about whether God exists or not. It is about discovering your own consciousness through direct experience. As your awareness grows, negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, and hatred naturally disappear, like dry leaves falling from a tree in autumn. Spirituality is a path toward inner experience and self-discovery

BLOOMING OF BEING

Spirituality: Level of Consciousness

Spirituality is about the level of consciousness in a human being. A more spiritual person is understood to have a higher level of consciousness than ordinary beings. Buddha is considered the most spiritual person India, as his consciousness is believed to have flowered to the highest potential of human awareness. When consciousness blooms, a person’s energy becomes centred and directed, helping them achieve meaningful and fruitful results.

Both believers and non-believers can fail in their chosen field if they live unconsciously, with a sleeping awareness. Some people worship, recite mantras, perform their duty, and even meditate mechanically, without real presence or consciousness. Actions performed without awareness lose their depth and meaning, and such people often fail to achieve true fulfilment or excellence.

A non-believer may reject all religious ideas and still develop deep self-consciousness through awareness and self-understanding. Spirituality does not depend on whether a person believes in God, scriptures, or religious systems. What truly determines spirituality is the level of consciousness a person attains. So, spirituality is not a matter of faith or non-faith, but of awakening consciousness and understanding oneself deeply.

Spirituality is not defined by beliefs, scriptures, or rituals, but by the depth of your awareness.

MOVEMENT OF THOUGHTS

Understanding the Mind

Without understanding the mind, it is impossible to transcend it. The mind is constantly filled with thoughts, memories, beliefs and reactions. But beyond the movement of thoughts exists a silent consciousness that simply watches them, just as clouds pass through the open sky. This witnessing awareness is deeper than the mind itself. At the deepest centre of consciousness, there are no thoughts, no labels, and no divisions—there is only pure being. And that state of pure being is one’s true nature.

When a child is born, he carries no ideology, no religion, and no belief or disbelief. He simply exists as a pure expression of life, naturally connected to the whole existence. The purpose of spirituality is to rediscover this pure consciousness, this pure existence free from mental conditioning and inner noise. It is a return to the original state of awareness that exists beyond ideas, identities and borrowed beliefs.

RECOGNIZING INNER SPACE

Meditation Underlies Spirituality

Like spirituality, meditation is not concerned with acceptance or rejection, belief or disbelief, or individual preferences such as love and hate. It does not belong to the realm of opinions, ideologies, or emotional reactions. Instead, it points directly toward consciousness itself, which is your most fundamental and essential nature. In meditation, the mind gradually settles, and the train of thoughts begins to halt.

Meditation is not about changing what you think, but about recognizing the space in which thoughts arise and disappear. In this recognition, a deeper understanding emerges—that your true identity is not the content of the mind, but the silent consciousness that witnesses everything.

Meditation and spirituality are like two carts of the same wheel that draw you inward. They do not depend on words, knowledge, or borrowed experiences from others. Instead, they point toward a direct journey of self-discovery. It is a movement from the outer surface of life to the deeper inner reality. Ultimately, it is a path where the self begins to recognize and merge with its own higher nature through direct experience.

Scientists cannot completely control natural disasters or asteroids falling on earth’s atmosphere; instead, they carefully observe them, study their causes, and discover ways to reduce their impact through understanding and awareness. In the same way, you should observe thoughts and emotions without resistance or judgment. A person needs to become sensitive to how thoughts and emotions affect the inner state. By calmly watching the changes in breathing, bodily sensations, and mental reactions, one gradually develops deeper awareness and understanding. It creates inner balance and helps the mind become peaceful.

Remove what is false and borrowed, and truth reveals itself naturally. It is discovery by going beyond the restless movements of the mind

“WHO AM I”

Discovering Truth through Inner Experience

Spirituality is a path toward inner experience and self-discovery. Even a non-believer can deeply progress on this path if he sincerely remains engaged in understanding fundamental questions such as: “Who am I?”, “What is the purpose of life?”, “From where have I come, and where will I go?”, and “Why have I come to this Earth for a limited period of time?” When a person contemplates these questions deeply and honestly, an inner journey begins.

Spirituality begins at the point where both belief and disbelief come to an end. It is not a matter of accepting ideas or rejecting them, but of going beyond the internal clashes of thoughts and counter-thoughts. In this sense, spirituality is a way of living where a person moves in the outer world, yet remains deeply connected to centre. Actions continue, responsibilities are fulfilled but an inner stillness remains untouched beneath all activity.

Final thoughts:

Spirituality begins where both belief and disbelief dissolves. It is not about accepting certain ideas or rejecting others but about rising above the constant conflict of thoughts. An atheist can also be deeply spiritual if they live with awareness, remain open to inner exploration, and do not become trapped in rigid intellectual beliefs. Spirituality is not defined by belief in God or religion; it is defined by the depth with which one experiences inner silence. In that silence, a deeper understanding of consciousness begins to unfold.
